Synopsis

Three outlaws rescue a young woman after bandits kill her father and decide to become her protectors. Joining the rush toward newly opened land, they try to arrange a secure future for her while confronting a corrupt sheriff. Their growing attachment to her changes what they are willing to risk as settlers and criminals converge on the same opportunity.

Historical context

Ford places the outlaws' unlikely guardianship within the spectacle of a land rush. The title's judgment becomes increasingly unstable as men outside the law behave more generously than the authority supposedly responsible for protecting the settlers.
