Amazon: Longest River in the World

Synopsis

A journey through the Amazon presents river transport, forest life, Indigenous communities and the extraction of regional resources. Work with rubber, timber, food crops and animal products receives sustained attention alongside landscapes and wildlife. The film offers an extensive historical record while also reflecting the commercial ambitions and unequal relationships of those who commissioned it.

Behind the scenes

Silvino Santos filmed the material beginning in 1918, before its documented European exhibition in 1922. The long-lost work was identified in the Czech film archive in 2023, bringing an early Brazilian account of the Amazon back into circulation.
