Synopsis

An American couple's Alpine holiday exposes a distance that the husband has failed to notice. An Austrian officer offers the wife the attention she misses, turning hospitality into calculated seduction. When the two men climb a mountain together, a letter and an accusation bring the marriage's uncertainties into a physically dangerous confrontation.

Cast

Historical context

Erich von Stroheim made his directing debut from his own story and also played the interfering officer. The Alpine setting links a detailed study of marital neglect to a climactic test of trust and responsibility on the mountainside.
