He Did and He Didn't

Synopsis

A doctor becomes jealous when his wife's handsome former schoolmate joins them for dinner. Suspicion transforms ordinary hospitality into imagined betrayal, and the night's disturbances grow increasingly violent. The story keeps testing whether the husband's fears describe what is happening around him or the consequences of what he has eaten and imagined.

Cast

Behind the scenes

Arbuckle combines domestic slapstick with a darker dream structure. The comic framework allows jealousy and apparently serious violence to be reconsidered when the film returns to the circumstances of the meal.
