Synopsis

A forceful New York father tries to run his nineteenth-century household as efficiently as his office. His wife and four sons repeatedly frustrate that ambition. Family routines reveal the limits of authority and the affectionate negotiations beneath it.

Inspirations

Clarence Day's autobiographical writing reached the screen through the stage adaptation by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. Family recollection is reshaped as comedy, rather than presented as a documentary record.
