Synopsis

A celebrated French charmer and an American singer meet during an Atlantic crossing, although both have commitments waiting ashore. They promise to reunite in New York after giving themselves time to build a different future. The question of whether that meeting will happen turns a shipboard attraction into a story about patience, pride and missed connections.

Behind the scenes

The screenplay evolved through censorship negotiations and contributions from the performers. That process brought delays and extra expense, but also helped shape the unusually delicate balance of comedy, intimacy and emotional restraint associated with Leo McCarey's direction.

Reception and legacy

The film received six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. Its reputation rests especially on the chemistry between Irene Dunne and Charles Boyer and on McCarey's ability to move from light conversation to lasting emotional consequences.
