Synopsis

A ferry approaches Manhattan, introducing a city seen through crowds, structures, work and changing light. The sequence moves without a central character toward a sunset viewed from a skyscraper. Intertitles drawn from Walt Whitman accompany the urban images.

Behind the scenes

Painter Charles Sheeler and photographer Paul Strand bring a largely static photographic approach to moving images. The arrangement of views makes the city itself the subject of the short.
