Synopsis

A Navajo man returns from an Eastern education to find himself excluded by white society and estranged from his own community. His relationship with a woman from another nation creates further conflict. Discovering oil gives him a new opportunity, but securing its benefits means confronting outsiders and the divisions separating the people he wants to help.

The film distinguishes Indigenous lands from the white social world through colour and monochrome passages. Despite its criticism of discrimination, white actors play the principal Indigenous characters, and its ideas about assimilation reflect the limitations of its period.
