Synopsis

A young woman defends a settlement of impoverished families against the landowner determined to expel them. His son sympathises with her, while his daughter faces a private crisis she cannot safely reveal at home. Protecting others places Tess in conflict with both property rights and the judgments of a community that already treats her as an outsider.

Cast

Behind the scenes

Mary Pickford revisited a role she had played in 1914, using a larger production to retell Grace Miller White's story. The return to Tess draws on the combination of resilience and vulnerability central to Pickford's screen popularity.
