Synopsis
A teenager persuades her adoptive father to hire a school friend on their isolated farm. The boy's proposed shortcut through the woods provokes an unexpected warning. Curiosity about a forbidden place threatens the household's carefully maintained privacy.

George Agnew Chamberlain's novel had been serialised in The Saturday Evening Post. Delmer Daves adapted it with uncredited work by Albert Maltz, moving the mystery from serial publication into a sustained rural atmosphere.
