Synopsis
A wandering man helps a farmer's daughter escape thieves and is invited to work on the farm. His awkward attempts at useful labor create trouble, but his attachment to the household grows. Protecting it from a robbery gives him a chance to prove his loyalty, even as he misunderstands what place he might occupy in the young woman's future.
Cast
Historical context
This Essanay production gives Chaplin's recurring wanderer a sustained emotional disappointment alongside the physical comedy. The road is both the place from which he arrives and the alternative that remains when domestic belonging proves uncertain.
