The Winning of Barbara Worth

Synopsis

Raised by a man who dreams of irrigating the desert, Barbara becomes involved with an engineer working to divert the Colorado River. His employer's refusal to strengthen the project threatens the settlement. Romantic rivalry gives way to a struggle against a flood produced by human decisions as much as nature.

Inspirations

Henry King adapted Harold Bell Wright's novel around the historical creation of the Salton Sea in 1905. California and Nevada locations support the contrast between the desert's apparent emptiness and the scale of the water unleashed upon it.
