Synopsis
A painter brings an independent village girl to Shanghai, where her behaviour clashes with his wealthy family’s expectations. Choosing each other means leaving comfort behind. As money runs out, the couple’s affection is tested by illness, separation and the wider unrest gathering beyond their small rented room.
