Synopsis

A Paris sewer worker intervenes when a young woman is attacked by her abusive sister. To protect her from the police, he claims that they are married and offers shelter in his high attic room. Their improvised arrangement becomes a profound attachment just as war threatens to separate them.

Frank Borzage's adaptation of Austin Strong's play established Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell as an important romantic pairing. Initially released as a silent film, it also circulated with a synchronised Movietone score and sound effects during the industry's transition to recorded sound.
