Synopsis
Desperate to obtain medicine for her mother, Angela is arrested in Naples and escapes into the life of a travelling circus. She falls in love with Gino, a painter who sees her as an ideal of innocence. Returning to the city brings the threat of recognition, and a past she cannot easily explain begins to separate her from him.
Cast
Behind the scenes
Borzage tells the story with intertitles and a synchronized accompaniment rather than spoken dialogue. Fog, strong shadows and elaborate street settings give the lovers' Naples a distinctly expressive atmosphere.
