Synopsis

A financier gains control of the wheat market while farmers continue their exhausting work and families struggle to buy bread. His success is celebrated with luxury and abundant food. By moving between those worlds, the film follows the human consequences of speculation and the distance separating a profitable transaction from an empty household table.

Inspirations

The story draws on Frank Norris's writing about grain speculation, including the short story A Deal in Wheat. Griffith and Frank E. Woods translate that economic conflict into a short sequence of contrasting settings.
