Synopsis

People, landscapes and industries from across the Soviet Union are assembled into a portrait of work and exchange. Farming, trade and the movement of goods connect distant regions. Vertov uses the travelogue material to argue that these different communities belong to one economic project, with exports helping to finance machinery and industrial growth.

Behind the scenes

Footage gathered by several camera teams becomes a single argument through editing and direct appeals in the intertitles. The result is a political documentary whose connections are deliberately constructed, rather than a neutral tour of the country.
