Young Pioneers compare prices, organize camp life and promote cooperative shopping, while the camera explores markets, village celebrations and street performances. Everyday activities are rearranged into unexpected sequences. Work can appear to run backward, and separate observations acquire new connections as Vertov asks viewers to examine how food, labor and social life fit together.
Vertov and cameraman Mikhail Kaufman build the documentary from actual locations and activities. Reverse motion and associative editing demonstrate the camera's ability to analyze events rather than simply reproduce the order in which they occurred.
