Synopsis
A soldier's attraction to Carmen draws him away from his fiancée, his military career and the life he had expected to lead. Joining the smugglers around her does not secure her lasting affection. When she turns toward a celebrated bullfighter, his refusal to accept her independence transforms devotion into a threat.

Inspirations
Lubitsch adapts Mérimée's story with Pola Negri as Carmen. The film's American release used the title Gypsy Blood; its plot, like Bizet's opera, concentrates on the central relationship rather than the novella's full framing narrative.
