Christopher Columbus

Synopsis

A series of tableaux follows Columbus from danger at sea to an American landing and a triumphant return to Spain. Courtly favor gives way to disgrace and imprisonment before a final celebratory image. The compressed biography is organized as a succession of public moments.

Historical context

The Pathé production presents a European heroic view of the voyage and its aftermath. Its staged welcome by Indigenous people belongs to that representation, rather than serving as evidence of how the encounter occurred.
