Synopsis
At an isolated British outpost in East Africa, evidence of arms smuggling deepens a conflict between local administrators and military command. A woman who controls a trading caravan may be the key to understanding what is happening. The wartime adventure places uneasy alliances and colonial assumptions at the centre of its struggle for control.
Its East African setting places the adventure inside Britain's colonial world during the war. The film is useful to view as an expression of that period's Hollywood perspective on empire, alongside its suspense plot and exoticised setting.
Producer Walter Wanger assembled the project through studio loans, including Gene Tierney from Fox and director Henry Hathaway from Paramount. Despite three Academy Award nominations, the production lost money.
