Synopsis

A farmer's son meets a waitress while selling the family's wheat in Chicago and marries her before returning home. She hopes the countryside will offer peace, but his father greets her with suspicion and hostility. Harvest labour, unwanted attention and the young husband's failure to defend her threaten the new marriage.

Behind the scenes

F. W. Murnau filmed rural scenes in Oregon for a story set in Minnesota. The production was subsequently adapted into a part-talking release, but the surviving silent version preserves the visual approach associated with Murnau's direction.
