Synopsis

A racketeer offers passage to fleeing Cuban loyalists and the government treasure they carry. He plans to steal the fortune and blame their deaths on a legendary sea monster. An inept undercover agent watches the scheme unfold, while something in the water threatens to make the invented explanation unexpectedly plausible.

Historical context

Charles B. Griffith and Roger Corman combine gangster plotting, spy-film parody and a deliberately comic monster. Robert Towne, later celebrated as a screenwriter, plays the secret agent under the name Edward Wain. The film continues the dark-comedy experiments seen in A Bucket of Blood and The Little Shop of Horrors.
