Synopsis
A bank cashier imagines a more exciting life after seeing an elegant foreign customer. He steals money and abandons his family, hoping wealth will buy the intensity he has been missing. Moving through fashionable entertainments and public gatherings, he repeatedly discovers that the experiences he purchases do not answer the need that drove him away.

Cast
Behind the scenes
Karlheinz Martin brings Georg Kaiser's play into a visual world of distorted painted scenery, emphatic costume and stylized performance. The coordination of those elements makes the film a particularly concentrated experiment in German Expressionism.
