Synopsis

Isak clears land and builds a life with Inger beneath the mountains of rural Norway. As their household takes shape, other lives and conflicts enter the story, and a changing society grows around the farm. Work, family and the consequences of private choices connect the smaller dramas to the transformation of the landscape.

Inspirations

Gunnar Sommerfeldt adapted Knut Hamsun's novel and also appears as the bailiff Geissler. The film brings the novel's concern with cultivation and social change into the landscape-based storytelling of Scandinavian silent cinema.
