Synopsis
A planter's independent-minded daughter prefers riding, swimming and direct expression to the conventions expected of her. She falls for a British engineer supervising a dam, but he already has a wife. When that marriage stands in the way of their relationship, she devises a risky intervention involving the project on which his prospects depend.
Clara Bow stars in Victor Fleming's adaptation of Armine von Tempski's novel. Its Hawaiian setting supports a Hollywood fantasy of freedom from mainland social rules, while the heroine's clothes and assertive behaviour connect her to contemporary flapper imagery.
