Synopsis

A British officer in the trenches discovers an old sword and is drawn into the story of Joan of Arc. Her military mission, capture and trial unfold as an extended vision of sacrifice. When the film returns to the modern battlefield, the soldier interprets her example through the dangerous decision now facing him.

Cast

Historical context

DeMille connects a medieval French heroine to the moral demands of the First World War. The framing story makes the historical spectacle serve a contemporary argument about courage and sacrifice, rather than presenting Joan's life as an isolated episode.
