Synopsis
A cabaret singer beginning again in Morocco meets a Foreign Legion soldier whose charm offers little promise of security. A wealthy admirer presents a very different future. Attraction, jealousy and the soldier's military obligations force her to weigh comfort against a relationship that neither lover seems able to make safe.
Cast
Historical context
Marlene Dietrich's performance in evening tails, including a kiss with a woman in the nightclub audience, became one of the film's most discussed challenges to the gender conventions of its period.
Inspirations
The story derives from Benno Vigny's Amy Jolly and was adapted for the screen by Jules Furthman. It provided a new collaboration for Dietrich and Sternberg after their work on The Blue Angel.
