Synopsis

Three children abandoned to boarding-school life promise that their own marriages will be different. As adults, affection and financial insecurity pull them into a triangle that undermines that promise. A calculated marriage after a night of drinking binds the wrong pair together, leaving all three to confront the childhood fears guiding their choices.

Behind the scenes

Paramount brought Josef von Sternberg into the project after becoming dissatisfied with Frank Lloyd's version. Revisions extended beyond intertitles to efforts to reshape the production. Clara Bow, Esther Ralston and Gary Cooper lead the resulting romantic melodrama.
