Cast
Historical context
The film began Pudovkin's revolutionary trilogy, followed by The End of St. Petersburg and Storm Over Asia. Its emphasis on a mother's changing loyalties gives the wider conflict a personal point of entry.
Inspirations
Pudovkin adapts Maxim Gorky's novel about political awakening during the revolutionary movement of 1905.
