Synopsis

A young peasant reaches St. Petersburg looking for work and unknowingly helps a factory suppress a strike. The consequences of that mistake, followed by military service and war, change his understanding of the people around him. His personal awakening becomes part of a larger account of hunger, labour conflict and revolution.

Cast

Historical context

Commissioned for the October Revolution's tenth anniversary, Pudovkin's film follows ordinary workers and soldiers rather than concentrating on prominent political leaders. It belongs to his revolutionary trilogy alongside Mother and Storm over Asia.
