Synopsis
During the War of 1812, an American captain undertakes a secret voyage to collect gold from France. He recruits a former British officer whose old crew is less interested in the mission than in the cargo. Once the purpose of the voyage becomes known, divided loyalties threaten the ship from within.

This was Edward Dmytryk's first directorial production after his testimony before the House Un-American Activities Committee. A member of the Hollywood Ten, he had been imprisoned and blacklisted; his return to filmmaking belongs to the larger history of political pressure in postwar Hollywood.
