Synopsis
A young count arrives in a small European duchy where a military strongman is tightening his grip on the ruler and her people. Concealing his abilities behind an ineffectual public persona, the visitor joins the resistance. Secret passages, masked interventions and a developing romance turn political rescue into a swashbuckling adventure.

Historical context
The invented European kingdom allows a costume adventure to echo the dictatorships and political threats facing Europe around 1940. Its masked-hero tradition also draws on the appeal of The Prisoner of Zenda and Zorro-style swashbuckling.
Behind the scenes
Edward Small's production reused sets and several collaborators from The Man in the Iron Mask. That continuity helped create an elaborate period world while drawing on resources already developed for another adventure.
