Robinson Crusoe

Synopsis

Shipwrecked far from home, Robinson Crusoe gathers supplies and builds a life on an island. His rescue of a captive brings a companion, Friday, into the adventure. Storms, conflict and the arrival of mutinous sailors become successive obstacles on the path toward returning to England, presented through a series of elaborate theatrical scenes.

Inspirations

Méliès adapts Defoe's novel with designs influenced by J. J. Grandville's illustrations. The island inhabitants are shown through the colonial stereotypes of the adventure tradition, while painted scenery and stage effects shape the extraordinary landscape.
