Synopsis
During a royal banquet, Salomé becomes fascinated by the imprisoned prophet whom her mother resents and her stepfather fears. His refusal to respond to her desire turns attraction into an unforgiving demand. When Herod offers a reward for her dance, the palace's private obsessions acquire fatal political force.
Alla Nazimova financed and starred in this adaptation of Oscar Wilde's play. Natacha Rambova's stylised design creates an artificial, ornamental world suited to its theatrical language. The production's visual ambition later helped establish its standing as an unusual early American art film.
