Shoes

Synopsis

Eva's small shop wage supports her parents and younger sisters, leaving nothing to replace her ruined shoes. Cardboard repairs no longer protect her feet. As her father avoids work, the pressure of a basic necessity pushes her toward an exchange she would otherwise refuse.

Inspirations

Lois Weber adapted Stella Wynne Herron's short story, itself prompted by Jane Addams's writing on women's economic vulnerability. A worn pair of shoes makes poverty visible through an ordinary object rather than an abstract argument.
