Synopsis
A district attorney prosecutes cases involving contraception and abortion without realizing how closely they touch his own household. His wife's secret dealings with a doctor intersect with a young servant's pregnancy and a disastrous operation. Public judgments about morality become inseparable from private decisions and unequal social power.

Historical context
Lois Weber and Phillips Smalley's social-problem film reflects contemporary disputes over birth control. Its arguments also draw on eugenic assumptions, making it a historical expression of those debates rather than a neutral guide to reproductive health.
