Synopsis
Lupita fears that her fiancé has died when news arrives of a ship sunk by a German submarine. Turning to the Virgin of Guadalupe for comfort, she reads the story of Juan Diego and the apparitions at Tepeyac. The religious account becomes an extended narrative within her own, eventually reconnecting private hope with a public act of devotion.

Historical context
The film combines dramatized religious history with images of popular observance at the Villa de Guadalupe. Its movement between fictional characters and an actual crowd preserves aspects of Mexican devotional life in 1917.
