Synopsis

A secret society decides that a wealthy man must die and assigns the killing through a draw of cards. The chosen assassin loves a woman devoted to the organisation, who offers marriage to strengthen his resolve. Their new attachment changes how they view the mission, while a jealous fellow member watches their loyalty begin to falter.

Ruth Wightman's screenplay adapts Gouverneur Morris's story The Purple Flask. Lon Chaney's role places wounded affection beside political fanaticism, while the ace itself appears as the film's main title instead of a written title card.
