Synopsis

In fifteenth-century Paris, the bell-ringer Quasimodo becomes involved in a plot against the dancer Esmeralda. Her kindness unsettles the loyalties imposed on him by his master. Around Notre Dame, unequal power and public cruelty threaten people judged by their appearance or status.

Cast

Inspirations

Victor Hugo's novel supplied the cathedral setting and its central outsider. Lon Chaney had long been associated with the possibility of playing Quasimodo before the ambitious production finally took shape.
