Synopsis

A wealthy Londoner accepts a doctor's challenge to live for a year on his own earnings without drawing on his inheritance. Ordinary work introduces him to financial insecurity and relationships that his previous life kept at a distance. The wager becomes more complicated when affection creates reasons to reveal the resources he has promised not to use.

Cast

Inspirations

E. Phillips Oppenheim's novel The Curious Quest had already been filmed before this Cary Grant adaptation. Its wager makes paid work and social contact a proposed remedy for a millionaire's discontent.

Behind the scenes

The British title was The Amazing Quest of Ernest Bliss. The shorter American release became The Amazing Adventure, explaining why versions of different lengths and titles appear in catalogues.
