Synopsis

Actors recreate the procession, oath, anointing and crowning of Edward VII, followed by the assembled court's homage. The abbreviated ceremony is staged to give spectators a view of an event otherwise inaccessible to the camera.

Behind the scenes

Charles Urban commissioned Méliès to simulate the coronation after permission to film the real ceremony was refused. Made before the event on a painted outdoor set, the film is a reconstruction, not footage of the king and queen being crowned.
