The Haunted Castle

Synopsis

A bat enters a castle and transforms into a devil who conjures an assistant, a woman and a series of apparitions. Two visitors find themselves surrounded by vanishing objects and figures that refuse to keep the same shape. Their attempts to resist turn the haunted room into a compact theatre of surprises, fright and comic confusion.

Behind the scenes

Méliès filmed the trick scene with painted scenery in his garden. Its devils and spectres later earned it a place in horror-film histories, although its transformations also belong to the tradition of comic stage magic.
