Synopsis

An Italian woman tending a lighthouse during the war shelters a man who claims to be an American deserter. Their secret marriage gives her companionship amid repeated family losses. When a signal she sends is followed by the sinking of a ship, evidence about her husband's identity forces her to reconsider the life they have built.

Frances Marion wrote and directed the film for Mary Pickford, who wanted an adult role rather than another adolescent heroine. The resulting wartime melodrama makes intimacy and deception part of the same apparently protective relationship.
