Synopsis

An eleven-year-old girl lives in a mansion with busy parents and servants who treat her wishes as inconveniences. Brief encounters with life outside its rules offer the companionship she lacks at home. After a careless dose of sleeping medicine makes her dangerously ill, familiar people and phrases take unsettling forms in a delirious dream world.

Cast

Inspirations

Frances Marion adapted Eleanor Gates's 1913 play for Maurice Tourneur and Mary Pickford. Filming in Fort Lee, New Jersey, connects the production to an important early American studio centre. The film was added to the National Film Registry in 1991.
