Synopsis
An Egyptian ruler is expected to secure an alliance by marrying an Ethiopian princess, but becomes obsessed with a Greek captive. Her love for a builder's son places both of them at his mercy. The pharaoh's desires upset the planned union between kingdoms and connect a private struggle for freedom with invasion and rebellion.

Behind the scenes
Lubitsch staged the epic in Germany shortly before moving to Hollywood. The film survives through restoration and reconstruction from scattered materials, so its recovery should not be confused with the rediscovery of an untouched complete original print.
