Synopsis
A jobless rider impresses a town marshal by intervening in a bank robbery. The marshal recruits him to investigate a rodeo where promising competitors have died under suspicious circumstances. Entering the events gives the stranger a chance to expose the organizers, but winning may also make him their next target.

The film uses a rodeo setting to vary the pattern of John Wayne's Lone Star Westerns. Location filming included Lone Pine, California. A singing-cowboy interlude uses a dubbed voice for Wayne, an example of the studio's experiments with his early screen persona.
