Synopsis

A variety theater seems to employ the same remarkably familiar man in every possible position, from orchestra to audience. The dream gives way to backstage work, but mistaken identities and deceptive appearances continue. A stagehand's pursuit of romance among twins becomes entangled with unruly performers and a show that must somehow keep going.

Historical context

The vaudeville setting draws on Keaton's background as a stage performer. It also preserves minstrel-show material, including blackface, reflecting racist conventions in American entertainment of the period. The visual ingenuity and that historical context are both part of the surviving film.

Behind the scenes

The opening multiplies Keaton within a single frame through carefully masked, repeated exposures. Cinematographer Elgin Lessley had to keep the manually operated camera consistent as each part was performed separately. The illusion transforms a theater ensemble into a demonstration of what film editing and photography can make possible.
