Synopsis
Hester Prynne bears a child outside marriage and refuses to identify the father. Forced to display a public mark of shame, she faces the judgments of a Puritan community. Her missing husband's return adds a private campaign of revenge to the punishment already imposed.
This was the first sound adaptation of Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel. Colleen Moore's dramatic lead and the reuse of elements associated with the 1926 version connect it to the silent-era tradition it followed.
