Synopsis
A banker leaves a fortune in his home, and news of the money reaches people with different reasons to steal it. An elegant criminal and a much less experienced thief cross paths with the banker's wife and her lover. The resulting robbery leads to a trial where another performance may prove as valuable as the original deception.

Inspirations
Protazanov adapts Umberto Notari's The Three Thieves into a comedy of overlapping schemes. The Italian setting lets the film move between financial respectability, marital deceit and the theatrical possibilities of a courtroom.
